WWE News: John Cena teases a surprise return at the Royal Rumble

Just a day before the Royal Rumble, John Cena has teased a possible appearance at the WWE event on his Instagram account.

We're just 24 hours away from WWE's second-biggest event of the year, the Royal Rumble, from taking place in Houston.

So far, 27 superstars have confirmed their spots in the men's Royal Rumble match, including Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, AJ Styles, Drew McIntyre, and Brock Lesnar, who will be entering the match at the number one spot.

That just leaves three spots open for NXT superstars, which none have been confirmed for either match yet, as well as surprise returns.

Icons from the past rumoured to make a return in the men's Royal Rumble include Edge and CM Punk. Now, John Cena has added his name to that list.

Earlier today, Cena posted a picture of a Royal Rumble taking place on his Instagram account, more specifically, the 2013 Royal Rumble, which was won by him.

A two-time Royal Rumble match winner in 2008 and 2013, The Leader of the Cenation hasn't competed in the Royal Rumble since 2018, where he was among the final four in the match alongside Finn Balor, Roman Reigns, and the winner, Shinsuke Nakamura.

Cena took a step back from WWE in 2019 in order to focus on other projects. It was the first year in the past 17 years that he hadn't worked a match on a pay-per-view.

Recently, the 16-time world champion spoke about possible retirement from the ring, as he stated he wanted to hang up his wrestling gear before his body forces him to.

During a recent interview, he said: "Dude, all this stuff is great, but if it all stops tomorrow, I’m still okay with me. I know the good things that define me and I know the qualities I have as a human being. I’m going to move on and go forward.

"I know that all this is borrowed. I’m just grateful to have it and grateful to be able to contribute. I don’t want to be greedy as a performer and I see that a lot in sports entertainment."

However, with rumours swirling that he wants to have a substantial role at WrestleMania 36, and with this recent post on social media, perhaps Cena will have one last hurrah in the ring before retiring and riding off into the sunset.
